Maya Holguin comes to Sierra Expeditionary Learning School with a wide variety of teaching experiences. She has spent more than 10 years as a classroom educator, working with kindergarten through 3rd grades. She also feels fortunate to have taught in the field of outdoor education and wilderness adventure.
Ms. Holguin is moving from Santa Cruz, California, where she not only grew up, but has spent the past 3 years teaching in the local public schools. She helped develop kindergarten curriculum and also worked closely with 3rd graders on literacy. Last year she particularly enjoyed having daily parent volunteers in her classroom.
Her love of adventure and dedication to continuing her personal education is evidenced by the 4 years Ms. Holguin spent living and teaching abroad. She taught at International American schools in Bolivia and Colombia, where she contributed to the development of school-wide and grade-specific learning standards for students whose second language was English. Working and living in other cultures has helped give Ms. Holguin a broad worldview and strong Spanish language skills, and she enjoys bringing this knowledge into her classroom.
Ms. Holguin is very excited to become part of the local Truckee community, where she plans to spend her free time exploring the outdoors, making new friends and improving her newfound love of skiing.
