Expedition Express

The Welch Crew had another successful fieldwork experience on Friday, October 7th.  We headed east to Carson City, NV and visited the Nevada State Railroad Museum and then out to Virginia City, NV and took a spin on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad to Gold Hill.  It was a great time for the students to ride trains as they were back in the “good ol’ days.”  Thanks to our supportive parents that drove our crew, Marcy Thompson, Stephani McGarry, Steve Cherneff, Tim McDermott, Kerri Flaherty, and Anna Demm.  These trips wouldn’t be possible without your help.

Questions of the Week:  Where did the Union Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific Railroad finally meet? (Promontory Summit, UT).  What did they call the last spike at the celebration?  (The Golden Spike).  What were some of the hardships the Chinese workers faced while building the railroad through the Sierra Nevada? (Frostbite, avalanches, injuries from black powder and nitroglycerin, lack of food and water to name a few).  What were the Chinese workers called? Why? (Coolies, because their trademark braid down the middle of their back was called “queues”).
