Classroom News

Reading groups are up and running very successfully. Students are working hard at being independent during literacy centers, and because of this I am able read with groups every other day. When the students are not reading with me, they are involved in a variety of literacy activities. Their imagination and creativity is fascinating to see.

We have added 5 new words to our Word Wall. A personal word wall will go home next week so that students can make sure to spell the words correctly even while at home! I will also start sending home the weekly sight words.

In math we have started a new unit that focuses on addition and subtraction. It involves lots of games and concrete practice of putting numbers together and taking them apart. Ask your child about Odd and Even Addition and Button Addition. We continue to practice sorting, and students made their first independent graph using sorting information they created in small groups. Also, we are using the one hundreds chart to add by 10’s (ie: 27+10= 37).

Expedition News

We continue to work on our case study about plants that give us food. We are beginning to study about specific plant parts and their different jobs. To help give us some concrete knowledge about the various parts of a plant, we soaked and planted seeds this week. We will watch them grow and make observations over the next few weeks.

Our field work on Tuesday will give us more hands on experience with how plants grow, what they need to survive, how different plants grow in different areas, and how healthy soil is vital to plants.

Our crew has almost completed writing a book together about how to make apple leather. We have photos from my mother’s visit last month, and we have added the words. All we need now is a final title and dedication page.

I wanted to send out another thank you to all the parents who helped with our apple cooking day. Both SunMie and Melissa did a wonderful job organizing the afternoon, and it was a great success. Students got to core and peel apples, which were then made into apple pie, apple leather, and apple sauce.
