Expedition Express

Railroad: Good or Evil? We are in the final stages of our Fall Expedition and our 3rd case study focuses on the impact of the Transcontinental Railroad on Native American tribes in our area. We have read the story Death of the Iron Horse by Paul Goble and have discussed the initial impacts. We are also looking at some interesting vocabulary words and completing vocabulary sorts and understanding multiple meaning.

Energy Matters! This is the title of our Spring Expedition, which will lend itself to many fun science experiements in the classroom. To begin, I am gathering all our materials ahead of time so I can plan out which experiments will be feasable. Please sign up on our Google Doc Scavenger Hunt and sign up for any household items you may be able to donate to our crew. The more items we get, the more fun we will have.

Scholastic Book Orders: January Scholastic Book orders are due on Wednesday, January 18th. Please remember to get your order in. When students are excited about books, they read more. With each order you place, we get new books for the classroom. Thanks to everyone for your help in supplying our classroom library with fresh new books each month.

Nevada County Library: Please remember we are walking to the Library on Wednesday, January 18th, rain, snow, or shine. Make sure your child is proplerly dressed, including warm shoes.

Harvest of the Month: Thank you Dana Mudd (Calvin’s mom) and Amber DeFazio (Rief’s mom) for creating some delicious dishes using Kale and Chard last week for Harvest of the Month. Getting kids to eat these healthy foods is a tall task, but you two make it fun, educational, and yummy each month.

Family EL Night: Next week, SELS will host a Family EL Night on Thursday, January 26th, from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. If you have every wondered what your kids do each day in an Expeditionary Learning school from curriculum to culture and character, this evening is for you.
