Expedition News

This week we have started working on building our model farms! This section of our expedition is a combination of social studies and math, and we spend a large part of each day involved in learning and building our farms. Children are discovering foods that grow on farms, animals that are raised on farms, and equipment needed to run a farm. Students must use “farm bucks” to buy each item they add to their farms, whether that is a barn, goats, or a silo.

Classroom News

In language arts students are working on writing multiple sentences on a single topic. They are using the classroom word wall to help themselves spell high frequency words, and words with common spelling patterns. They continue to use “best guess” spelling for unknown words. The children are also focusing on starting sentences with capital letters and making sure to put periods at the end. We are working on writing sentences that are a full thought.

Literacy centers are going well, with each student working in small groups of 2-5 children. We are practicing retelling stories, giving summaries, telling what happens at the beginning, middle and end of a story, and relating what we read to our own lives.

Right before Ski/Skate week, we finished a math unit on geometry. Students had practice working with and describing hexagons, trapezoids, squares, rectangles, rhombuses, and triangles. We also learned about the 3-D shapes of a sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, and a cube. Students have been investigating what makes a parallelagram and growing patterns. We continue to work on addition and subtraction facts, along with strategies to solve story problems.

Volunteer Opportunities

Right after Spring Break (April 2-6) our crew will have swimming lessons once a week at the high school. I will need parent helpers to walk with us to and from the high school, and also to help children get dressed after the swim lessons (they will come to school in their swimsuits). We need at least one male and one female, I am hoping for 3-4 helpers. I will let you know the days and time asap.

I am still looking for parents to come into class from 10:00-10:45 to listen to students read.

We also still need at least one other person to help with student portfolios. I have one parent so far, and since it is a big project, it would be great to have 1-2 more volunteers.

I mentioned snow day folders a while back, then with all the sunshine, I didn’t worry too much about them. However, as of today, we have used our 2 free snow days, and any more snow days we have will require an Independent Study. Remember, the Independent Study allows us to have June 15th as our last day of school, so please make sure to complete the work and bring it back to school. I will send the packets home next Tuesday, if not before.
