Expedition News

Since our crew finished our model farms, we have been taking a closer look at chickens. We have fertilized eggs arriving this week. They will be in an incubator for the three weeks it takes for them to hatch. This is a great way for the children to see what happens from egg to chick. We are planning on weighing the eggs once a week, and recording any changes. We will also do egg “candling” to see what the developing chicks look like inside the egg.

We have also been working on the art part of our final project. Students will create a collage that illustrates their writing of where our food comes from. We have been studying books written and illustrated by Eric Carle, who does amazing things with paint and collage.

Chaffin Overnight

We now have our numbers set for the overnight to the Chaffin Family Orchard and are ready to start planning. I have a volunteer to coordinate the equipment, but still need someone to organize the food. This person will help plan the meals and organize parents to cook, but does NOT do all the cooking. We have 33 people coming, so the food will need to be easy to cook/prepare and kid friendly. I would like to meet with both the food and equipment coordinator this week, so please let me know if you can help with the food.

I will also be sending out an information survey to see what equipment we have access to. Please make sure to fill it out and send it back to school as soon as possible.

Classroom News

In math we are currently practicing and reviewing concepts we have been learning about throughout the year. We are measuring with rulers, practicing our addition and subtraction facts, counting money and telling time.

In writing students have been learning to use a easy rubric to assess how they think they are doing in different areas. We continue to practice starting our sentences with capital letters and ending with periods. We are also focusing on making sure our writing makes sense. These are things you can help your child with at home! We are just about to start working on our writing for our final project: Where does our food come from?
