Expedition Express

Our final month of school is jam packed with events, fieldwork, adventure, celebrations, and Passages.  Be careful not to blink or you may miss all the excitement.

Local Experts:  Last Tuesday, Ian from the Truckee Donner Public Utilities District came to SELS to conduct an energy survey with the crew and to teach them about energy conservation.  This was a great way for students to see first hand how small adjustments in our everyday lives can make a big difference in the amount of energy we use.

Celebration of Learning:  Our crew is gearing up for our spring Celebration of Learning on the evening of June 7th from 6:00 – 7:30 pm.  Come see and experience first hand the science experiments conducted this semester on sound, light, and heat energy.  The crew is working hard on creating displays in a Science Fair format and will be on hand to share their learning with the SELS and Truckee community.

Passages:  All 3rd grade students will present an expedition piece of work to a panel of parents, teachers, and students on Thursday, June 14th following lunch.  Passage Students will select their favorite expedition piece from the past two years and explain to the panel their learning targets, the process by which they completed the project, the learning that occurred, and how they would improve or change the piece given the chance.  Panel memebers will ask questions and students will answer spontaneously.  This is a great event to showcase the incredible learning that happens in every classroom, everyday.

Crew News

Reno Aces:  Our crew is heading to Reno on May 22 to Education Day at the Reno Aces.  Students will participate in 10 different learning stations, meet 2 Reno Aces players during a chalk talk, participate in a Question and Answer session with those players, and best of all, watch a baseball game.

Nevada County Library:  We will walk to the Nevada County Library on this week as one of our final excursions to the local public library.  Keep the love of reading alive this summer by participating in the Summer Reading Program at the library.

Harvest of the Month:  Our final tasting, strawberries, will be on Thursday, May 24th.  I would like to thank Amber DeFazio and Dana Mudd for a wonderful year of fruit and vegetable tastings.  You made many kids try new foods and convinced them that healthy options are tasty.  Thank you for your dedication this year.

Scholastic Book Orders:  The final book order of the year is due on Friday, May 25th.  Be sure to order books to keep your child reading throughout the summer.  Avoid the summer slide!!
