Expedition Express

FIRE and ICE:  Our Expedition is off to a great start and the student’s are working hard on their interviewing skills with each other and at home to prepare for interviews with Downtown business owners.  The purpose of the interviews is to gain knowledge about the historic buildings in our town and learn about the stories of the people that originally occupied those dwellings.

Family Interviews:  Please help guide your child in their homework assignment this week “Interview a Family Member.”  Students are expected to ask the questions clearly and write their answers in a manner that can be used for further information.

Boca Overnight Fieldwork:  The amount of information the student’s will learn on our overnight fieldwork is going to be extraordinary.  We have lined up an impressive list of local experts that will spend their time with our students sharing their knowledge of the Boca Townsite, Ice Harvest industry, Downtown Truckee (Old Jail and Historic Cemetery) and Fire Station #1. A camping information packet was sent home last week.  If you have any questions or need items listed on the camp list, please contact us so we can help your child be prepared for their grand adventure.

Crew News:

SIERRA Norms and Design Principles:  A major component of our program includes a committment to developing a strong culture among our students as scholars, family members, and community members.  These NORMS and DESIGN PRINCIPLES will be included in your child’s Tuesday folder this week as a reminder to live by these traits every day.  Please post in your home as a daily reminder.  You may want to place them on the refridgerator, on the bedroom door, on the bathroom mirror, or wherever you will see them daily.

Literacy in the Classroom:  Students are practicing their routines and becoming INDEPENDENT with our Daily 5 Literacy Program.  Students work daily in 5 core areas to build a strong literacy base.  Students are working on building their stamina in the following areas:

  • Read to Self
  • Read to Someone
  • Listen to Someone Read
  • Word Work (Spelling and Vocabulary)
  • Writing
