Expedition Express

FIRE and ICE:  Our Fall expedition is in its final stages.  We have one last project to complete on the Major Players in Truckee’s History.  We will kick-off this mini-research report/historical narrative next week on January 22.  Students will choose a historical figure on Truckee’s historical timeline and complete research related to that person.  Students will create a narrative story around that person, design a poster with important information, and share their findings with the crew.

Historical Society:  We are planning to deliver our Photo Overlays and descriptions to the Historical Society for accuracy on content.  Following the final revisions our plan is to send the book to print.  Information about how to purchase this product will be forthcoming.

Crew News

Homework:  In a effort to properly prepare students for the spring work load and utlimately 3rd and 4th grade, you will notice a gradual increase in the weekly homework.  Students and parents need to sit down and make a plan for completing the homework throughout the week and not waituntil the weekend to complete it all.  That’s not going to make anyone happy!!

Mid-year assessments:  The Welch crew is just about done with our mid-year assessments and overall I am very impressed with the growth the students are making in all areas of their academic work.  I have a few more Reading assessments, but please remember to keep up the good work and have your child read nightly for appoximately 30 minutes.  More if they are showing interest.

Book Orders:  January Book Orders came home this week.  Orders are being extended to Tuesday, January 22.  All students received a FREE BOOK coupon that can be used on the January or February book orders.  Order online and receive another FREE BOOK or send in the order form to school and I will place the order for your child.

Harvest of the Month:  Potatoes and Herbs were on the menu this afternoon for our crew.  Thanks to Dana Mudd for always making our tastings fun, informational, and delicious.

SELS News

Progress Reports:  All Progress Reports for K-8 will be sent home on Monday, January 28th.  As a reminder, our Progress Reports are based on California State Standards which means students are expected to meet these standards by the end of the school year.  This Report informs parents of the child’s progress towards those standards.  We do not grade using a traditional grading system, so please let me know if you have questions regarding your child’s progress.

Dress for cold temps:  Please remember to send your child to school prepared for outside temperatures.  We want to get them outside, in the fresh air.  It is also a safety factor in case of a school evacuation or emergency, your child may be required to stand outside for an extended amount of time.  They need to have the proper winter clothing on site.  Thanks for your help in this matter.
