Expedition Express

Anato-ME:  Our spring expedition is underway with an in-depth look inside the human body.  This science rich expedition will carry us through the end of the year.  Our first case study will delve into the 6 main body systems: circulatory, respiratory, muscular, skeletal, nervous, and digestive systems.  Students will investigate how these systems interact with each other and the importance of maintaining a healthy body for a healthy lifestyle.

We are looking forward to hosting a variety of local experts for this expedition which so far include:

  • Tom Kidd:  UNR Brain Awareness Week
  • Tim McDermott:  Skeletal System
  • Amber DeFazio:  Muscular System
  • Daphne Nielsen:  Physical Therapist
  • P.J. Anttila:  Physical Therapist
  • And more to come 🙂
CREW NEWS

Daily 5 Homework:  Our new homework structure is underway and I hope you are enjoying the ability to help assist your child in improving their literacy skills.  Based on feedback from the kids, it sounds as if everyone likes it.  The goal of this new format is to provide students with choice while completing their weekly homework.  Students have been instructed to continue working on their “Responsibility for Learning” when choosing the items on their homework menu.  Students need to work on the areas they would like to improve.  If they want to improve their reading, then they need to be reading.  If they would like to become better writers, then choose writing and word work.  Please take the time to read and help edit your child’s writing entries.  The immediate feedback from parents goes a long way.  If you have questions about this new structure, please email me or come by the classroom for a visit.
Scholastic Book Orders:  March book orders went home in the Yellow Folders today.  These orders are due next Monday, March 18th.  This will allow time for the books to arrive before Spring Break.  Help your child choose a “Good Fit” book that is high interest to them.  That is the best way to get them reading!
Cross Country Skiing:  We have enjoyed two weeks of amazing cross country skiing at Tahoe Donner Cross Country center.  The students have learned to push through their comfort zone and test their endurance and agility.  Each week we refelct on our experience and set goals for the next week.  This is a corner stone to our Adventure Program at SELS and the crew experience is amazing for each student.
Thanks to all the parents that have made this Adventure possible by driving and skiing with students the past two weeks:  Gina Coronel, Angie Perkins, Amanda Woodruff, Alison Schwedner, Carolyn Gallagher, Tina Cook, Jeff Bender, Maria Leftwich, Forrest Rader, and John Shaw.

Harvest of the Month:  Students were treated to the culinary delights of Dana Mudd with her Zucchini pancakes today.  Thanks for your monthly efforts to bring healthy food options to our crew.  You make eating fruits and vegetables fun and delicious!
