Expedition News
ANATO-ME: Our spring expedition and school year is quickly coming to a close. It is truly amazing how much the students have learned about the human body systems this semester. They look forward to sharing all of their hard work with you at Celebration of Learning next Thursday, June 6th. This celebration is scheduled for 6:00 – 7:30 and everyone is invited. Bring your family, friends, and neighbors to show how amazing our SELS students are in their academic endeavors.
Meeks Bay Adventure Campout: Our Spring Adventure Campout was exactly that…. An adventure through and through! Despite the horrendous winds all day and night, the students managed to keep smiles on their faces and roll with the punches. We found some shelter near the shore of beautiful turquoise waters Meek’s Bay, where the students climbed rocks, found numerous crawdads, and played imaginative games. Although we were unable to make it to Angora Lakes this trip, we enjoyed our plan B options of hiking to Emerald Bay and Fallen Leaf Lake. (How lucky are we that those are plan B?!) We are extremely appreciative for the flexibility and positive attitudes that both students and chaperones demonstrated throughout the entire trip. Special thanks to:
Seaborg Crew: Nick McDaniel, Steve Anderson, Chris Stone, Steph McGarry, Melissa Breitbard, Heidi Egan and Kaitlin Klaussen
Welch Crew: Michael Penwarden, Jeff Bender, Tina Cook, Angie Perkins, and Carolyn Gallagher
Campout Menu Planners: Steve Anderson (Also our master chef!), Jeremey Anderson and Susanna Neave

3rd Grade Passages: 3rd grade passages are scheduled for June 11th and 12th. In preparation for this presentation all 3rd grade students are required to take the passage elective with their crew leader during the final session. This will allow the 3rd grade student to revise and prepare for this important demonstration of knowledge to a public audience. If you have questions regarding passages please feel free to contact me.
The 3rd graders are coming home with a passage preparation packet so they can practice at home. A rubric will be included in the packet in regards to expectations. A passage schedule is also included in the packet. Students should practice their presentation at home for the next two weeks. They may practice in front of family members, pets, stuffed animals, or any passerby that is willing to listen to an amazing presentation. Please reiterate that the students will not be scored on the work presented, but HOW it is presented. Use the Rubric to provide feedback to your child. All 3rd graders will speak for about 10 minutes about their portfolio pieces. Reassure the students that they are the experts on their work and this is their chance to show it off!
Trout in the Classroom: Our crew has been home to approximately 35 Lahanton Cutthroat Trout for the past few weeks, watching them hatch from eggs to small trout ready to be released into the river. We will be releasing our babies this Thursday and PBS will be filming the release for their documentary “This American Land.”
Wizards Lab: Thanks to KidZone Museum, our students will get to experience the Lawrence Hall of Science program “What’s Matter?” This field work piggybacks with our Trout Release on May 30th. Whew, we are very busy these last few weeks of school.
Book Orders: The final book order of the year went home today. The due date is next Monday, June 3rd. Stock up for summer reading now so your child will be ready when school gets out.
Nevada County Library: Last week we visited the Nevada County Library for our final time this year. All Library cards have been sent home, many of which came home in today’s yellow folders.
