Welcome BACK-TO-SCHOOL!

Expedition Express:

I’ve Been Working on the Railroad:  Our fall expedition will kick-off on Monday, Sept. 9th with fieldwork on Donner Summit.  We will meet with local historian Greg Palmer and learn all about the Snowsheds and Tunnels constructed for the Transcontinental Railroad.  Students need to come prepared on Monday with the following items:

  • sack lunch
  • water bottle
  • hat
  • sunscreen
  • booster seats for 7 year old students
Overnight Adventure:  We will be continuing our railroad fieldwork with our overnight adventure to Sacramenton on Thursday, Sept. 19 – Friday, Sept. 20.  Permission slips will come home this week with your child’s Tuesday folder along with Information Packets.  Please read thoroughly and if you have questions, please contact me.
CREW NEWS
Library Cards:  We will begin our walking trips to the Nevada County Library in a couple of weeks.  If your child would like to check out books to read at home, please send in their public library card to school.  If you do not have a library card, I will send home applications with students following our first trip.  You may also stop by the library and pick up a card for your child beforehand.  I keep the cards on hand all year and send them home in June so your child may continue to check out books over the summer months.
Reading at home:  Reading at home is key to your child’s success in school.  Please do your best to read daily with your child but do not make it an unpleasant experience.  Work up to the 20 minute threshold by reading a comfortable amount with your child each night.  You will notice their stamina will increase with time and interest in books.
SELS NEWS
Chorus:  Starting on Tuesday, Sept. 10, Emily Tessmer is starting this year’s chorus program for 2nd – 8th grade students.  If your child is interested, please encourage them to make the commitment to attend Chorus every Tuesday.  They will begin right away with rehearsal for World Peace Day on Sept. 21 at Regional Park.
PTC Meeting:  The first PTC meeting will be held on Monday, Sept. 9 at 5:30 pm in M-2.  Get involved with all the wonderful activities the Parent Teacher Crew has planned for this year at SELS.
Board Meeting:  Interested in helping shape the future of SELS or just wondering about our program?  Come to the SELS monthly Board Meeting on Monday, Sept. 9 at 6:00 pm in M-8.  There are two opening for parents on the Board.  Interested parents are encouraged to attend Monday night.
Bus Lane and Drop-off Zone:  For safety reasons, there have been some changes to our Bus Lane location. Students will now be dropped off on the South side of the District Office alongside the gymnasium. Also the drop-off lane in front of the school is for drop-off and pick-up only.  Please use parking spaces in the parking lot if you will be visiting campus.
