Expedition Express

I’ve Been Making $$$ on the Railroad:  Now that the railroad is complete, with this new means of transport, Truckee was born.  In Case Study #2, students are learning about the economic influence of the railroad through the Sierra Nevada.

Questions of the Week:

  • Name three industries that started following the completion of the Railroad.
  • What was the summer industry and the winter industry?
  • Which of these 3 industries is still a main part of today’s economy in Truckee?
Celebration of Learning:  December 19, 6:00 – 7:30
Students have completed their Chautauqua scripts and will begin practicing this week for their perfomance at Celebration of Learning on Thursday, December 19th.  Students should practice nightly at home and be compiling pieces for their outfits.  A schedule of performances will be sent home in Tuesday’s Yellow Folder. You will be amazed at the knowledge your child has gained regarding the story of the Transcontinental Railroad.
CREW News
Troup in the Classroom:  Last spring, our crew participated in a SWEP (Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships) Trout in the Classroom program.  PBS filmed an episode of “This American Land” and documented the release of our trout into the watershed.  Here is a link to the program.  Our crew is highlighted at the 4:12 minute mark of the episode.  Enjoy.

Rotary Dictionaries:  Each year, Truckee Rotary donates student dictionaries to all 3rd grade students in TTUSD.  This is a nationwide program supported by Rotary in an effort to make sure all 3rd graders have a dictionary of their own.  Students at SELS are asked to write an essay on “How I Use My Dictionary” to be submitted in a district wide essay contest.  Last year, the winning essay came from our school.  The winning school receives a pizza party.  Students must submit their essays to their crew leader by December 20 to be eligible.

Holiday Book Order:  Our Scholastic Book Order will be submitted on Monday, December 9th.  I attached a FREE Book coupon to each order.  With a $10.00 purchase, you will receive a FREE book valued up to $5.00. Please let me know if this is a gift order and I will hold the books aside.  This order should arrive by Celebration of Learning.  This is a great gift for students and a sure way to keep them reading during the winter break.

Nevada County Library:  Welch crew will walk to Nevada County Library on Thursday, December 19th. Students will be able to check out books to read over break to keep their reading skills sharp.  We will be completing our mid-year reading assessments in January, so reading over winter break is essential for their succes.
