Expedition Express

Fire and Ice:  Students have continued to learn more about the fascinating history of Truckee and our early beginnings in industry and economics.  Our crew has completed a timeline of events in Truckee’s history, dating back to 1844.  After completion of the timeline, students worked collaboratively to help create three original Reader’s Theater scripts based on the informational texts we read in class.  Each script contains factual information on Ice Harvesting, Lumber Mills, and Fire in Truckee during the late 1800’s.

Each Reader’s Theater script will be presented during our Celebration of Learning on December 18th.  One group will perform at 6:15, the other at 6:45 pm.  Your child’s performance time will be sent home in the next few weeks.

Celebration of Learning:   Mark your calendars for our Fall 2014 Celebration of Learning on Thursday, December 18 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at SELS.  Plan to attend the Reader’s Theater performances in our classroom at either 6:15 or 6:45, then feel free to roam the school and learn about the other Expeditions happening in all the crews.  It truly is a Celebration of all our Learning.

Book Orders:  Scholastic Book Orders for December went home in today’s Homework Folders.  These orders are due this Friday, December 5 in order to ensure arrival before Winter Break.  If you would like to order books as a gift, please send me an email and I will hold the books aside and give them to you in private.

Nevada County Library:  Our next visit to the library will be on Monday, December 15.  Now that the weather is chilly, please be sure your child has a warm jacket, hat, gloves, and boots on the days we are visiting the library.

Harvest of the Month:  Students are able to experience locally grown fruits and vegetables each month through our Harvest of the Month program.  In November, our crew tasted spinach, thanks to Carrie and Larry Hunter.  Be sure to ask your child about the delicious food they get to taste in class.

Indoor shoes:  With winter upon us (finally), please consider sending your child to school with a pair of indoor shoes they may wear during the school day.  These shoes can range from slippers, to Crocs, or an old pair of sneakers.  This will help keep our carpets dry when the crew comes in from the snow and students won’t have to sit on wet carpet.

Performing Arts Fieldwork Experiences:  In November, our crew was fortunate enough to watch a sneak peek of the Miracle Worker at the Community Arts Center.  Ashlyn Sick, from the Welch Crew, and Anika Neave, from the Akers Crew, were cast in the performance. Students were entertained and learned about the story of Helen Keller through this performance.  On Friday, December 19th, we will walk over to Truckee High School and watch the Nutcracker. This is a great experience for students to watch high quality performances such as these two productions.

Learn to Ski program at Northstar:  Would you like to give your child the opportunity to learn how to ski?  Here is the perfect program.  The SOS program will give students 5 lessons, including lift tickets, rental equipment, and clothing if needed.  The cost of this program is $75.00 and our PTC is willing to cover the cost for our students.  The only requirement is that your child is at least 8 years old.  For more information, send me an email and I will forward the flier to you.
