Williams Crew,
It has been a few days since we got back from Grouse Ridge but wanted to recap some of the great moments from our trip (if you haven’t already heard about it from your kids).
On our first day we hiked down to Sanford Lake and the students used compasses and pacing to map the shore of the lake. We ate a great burrito dinner prepared by students and went up to the ridge above the lake to check our maps for accuracy, watch the sunset, and debrief our day.
On the second day, students participated in a scavenger hunt using compass bearings from known landmarks. Students experienced many successes and failures, and also showed great strength in overcoming obstacles. We ate great meals (french toast for breakfast and pasta for dinner, all prepared by students) and finished our day by enjoying the sunset, writing, and debriefing by the fire tower.
On our last day we woke up, ate pancakes, and broke down camp. We were joined by Howard Donner who taught students some knots and useful shelter building strategies. Students worked in teams to construct a shelter that could protect them from weather elements. Most of the students stayed dry, and everyone had fun.
I want to thank all of the parents who chaperoned or helped prepare for our fieldwork. This trip went so smoothly, it makes my job so much easier with parents who are so supportive. Thank you!
Photos from our trip are posted on the crew website. When you have a chance, take a look and I’m sure it will inspire a few stories from your child.
A couple of quick notes:
- We are starting our next case study (tomorrow) about European history.
- Next Monday (10/5) is a teacher inservice day, no school for students.
As always if you have any questions please let me know.
Zach
