EXPEDITION EXPRESS:
FIRE AND ICE
Our fall expedition is packed with a lot of local history that really helps students understand the early beginnings of our quaint little town of Truckee. We’ll look at how Truckee started in the mid-1800’s, and how FIRE and ICE shaped our town. Through this expedition, we will venture to Downtown Truckee on several occasions to notice and wonder about the years gone by, learning and sharing the rich stories our area holds. Students will also compile a list of their favorite places in Truckee today, to help visiting children enjoy the scenic area. A closer look at how our climate and natural resources played a major role with early economics in downtown and Boca.
Questions to ask your child (following our fieldwork this month)
What are your favorite historical buildings in downtown Truckee? Why?
Where is your favorite place to go today in downtown Truckee? Why?
Explain how Truckee is different today than it was in the 1800’s.
CREW NEWS:
DAILY PLANNERS
Help your child gain important organizational and time management skills by checking their Daily Planners every night. Instill the Responsibility for Learning by making this one of their jobs at home. Record the amount of time spent exercising and reading each day, then initial on the line where indicated. This is a great source of communication between school and home. Use it to your advantage. We recommend that the planners “live” in their backpacks.
THEMED BOOK BAGS
Reading is essential for student success in school. Each week, your child will bring home a Themed Book Bag as part of their home reading requirements. Bags are organized by theme and consist of a variety of book at varying reading levels. Choose books that can be read both independently and as a parent-child partnership. Complete the reading log and return to school on Fridays.
LIBRARY CARDS
Our crew frequently visits the Truckee Public Library. Please send in your child’s public library card to school this week. All cards will be returned at the end of the school year. If you child does not have a library card, stop by the Truckee Public Library at 10031 Levon Street in Truckee and pick one up so your child won’t be left out when we check out books in a couple of weeks.
SCHOOL NEWS:
BACK TO SCHOOL PAPERWORK
If you have not completed the Back-to-School Paperwork, including the Family Handbook, please print these forms and send them to school with your child this week. It is imperative that we have all these forms completed and on file prior to our upcoming fieldwork dates. If you need hard copies, let me know and I would be happy to send home a packet for you with your child.
PARKING LOT AND DROP OFF LANES
Remember to only use the drop off lanes in the parking lot if you are dropping off or picking up your child. DO NOT PARK in the drop off lane. Pull forward to the front before having your child unload or load up. Use the striped crosswalks when walking through the parking lot if you need to visit campus while keeping your child with you at all times.
