Hi all,

Having a great fall so far; students seem to be enjoying school, great fieldwork happening, our Electives Program off to a fantastic start, lots of participation by families. Lets keep it up.

Some information to share:

  • End of day, pick up changes: adjustments in students’ after school schedules are difficult for us to keep track of, particularly if we have less than 24 hr notice. We would greatly appreciate you taking care of this before students come to school. Since changes do happen, we will do our best to pass on the info, but want to let you know that on short notice, this sometimes does not happen (for various reasons).

  • Family Handbooks (on website and attached to email) must be read with your children. Please do this and return the signed form stating you have all read and agree to the contents outlined in the handbook. This will increase everyone’s understanding of our program. Thanks to those who have already turned these in.

  • Sierra Stars before school program still has lots of space. We have some regulars and some drop ins, and love offering this program to our community. 7:30-8 am drop off with supervision and programming until 9 am for $6/child (or $3child for Free/Reduced qualified).

  • Chorus started last week. Tues, 3:30-4:30 for K-5 ; Because there are not high numbers of upper grade participation, all students are welcome on all Thursdays. (This is a change from an earlier email about alternating weeks with different grade levels). Friday, Sept 21 chorus will perform in the Peace Day Celebration at the Regional Park (flyer attached to email).

  • Middle School Band started last week as well. Thurs, 3:30-4:30 for 6th/7th graders.

  • Picture Day, Thurs, Sept 27.  Order forms are coming home this week.
  • Odyssey of the Mind coaches training, Thurs Sept 27, ACMS 5:30-8 pm.

  • Please make sure your children have water bottles at school; when they forget one, they tend to not drink all day (which we usually do not know about until it is a problem). This is especially a problem when they are on the fields for PE.

Acknowledgment:

  • Kudos to SELS staff and parents who helped encourage students to read over the summer; SELS adopted Tahoe Pines and provided story time and book check out every Thursday. The SELS program was spearheaded by Elizabeth Bell and Sue Shimmon and was part of the larger community’s Tahoe Truckee Reads plan. In July, the National Civic League named the Tahoe Truckee region an All-America City based on this ambitious program, designed to ensure that more children are reading at grade level. Chosen from a field of more than 120 entries nationwide, Tahoe Truckee’s plan was submitted by a community coalition that included the Excellence in Education Foundation, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, Community Collaborative of Tahoe Truckee, Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, Placer and Nevada County Health and Human Services and First 5. Our community was one of 14 awardees selected from 32 finalists. SELS’ all-school summer read was highlighted in the proposal as one local strategy used to address summer literacy efforts.
