THANK YOU FOR MAKING OUR GOAL SETTING CONFERENCE WEEK A HUGE SUCCESS!  Goal sheets were sent home today in your child’s Yellow Folder.  Please help them locate a space to post these goals so they can see them on a DAILY basis.

Expedition Express

Fire and Ice:  We continue our work in class looking more closely at how FIRE and ICE helped form the town of Truckee.  The past two week have been focused on writing Thank You notes to our Fieldwork Experts, our downtown buisness owners that we interviewed, and our drivers that made this trip possible.

Questions of the Week: (continued from our Boca Fieldwork)

  • What interesting facts did you learn about the Old Jail?
  • Tell me about one story you heard in the Old Jail?
  • What did you learn from Paul Spencer about the fires in the beginning of Truckee?
  • What was your favorite part of the overnight fieldwork?
We will be heading downtown again to continue our photography project in the next few weeks.  More details to follow as we nail down the exact dates and times.
CREW News

Winter Gear:  Two snow days in October….say it isn’t so.  It looks like winter has arrived in Truckee.  This means students must be prepared for the weather, layering is the key.  Please label all outer wear so we can get these items back to your child if they are left out on the playground during recess.  Students will be outside for snack, lunch, and recess, so it is important they are properly outfitted.
Indoor Shoes:  With the arrival of winter comes the need for indoor slippers at school.  Snow boots track in ice and snow from the playground and make the carpet wet.  Please send your child to school with a pair of slippers (preferred rubber bottoms in case they need to go outside for an emergency) to wear in the classroom while the weather is snowy.
Harvest of the Month:  Thursday, October 25th will be our 1st tasting of the year with TOMATOES.  Thank you Dana Mudd for organizing our Harvest of the Month tastings again this year.  Remember to ask your students what interesting facts they learned about the fruits and vegetables they tasted each month and how they liked the recipes.
Nightly Reading:  Please continue to have your child read “Good Fit” books nightly as practice to improve  their overall reading and comprehension skills.  I have noticed many homework Reading Logs coming back on Monday mornings blank.  This is vital to the success of your child’s future in school.  Please set up a routine at home for this valuable time.
Library Dates:  We will be walking to the Nevada County Library next Thursday, November 1.  Please make sure your child has all their books with them next week in order to return on time.  Nikki Riley will facilitate our SELS library visits on the weeks we do not walk to the public library.  These check-out dates will begin Thursday, October 25th.  ALL SELS LIBRARY BOOKS NEED TO BE RETURNED BY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2.  The library committee will be labeling and scanning all books in our library on November 3rd. It would be great to have as many books returned before this process begins.  Thank you in advance.
Arts for the Schools: We are scheduled to attend the Lulu Dance Group sponsored by Arts for the Schools on November 7.  Please be on the look out for driving information and permission slips.
