Expedition Express

Fire and Ice:  Our current expedition is wrapping up this month as the crew complete’s a study of historical figures in Truckee.  Each student is currently designing a poster depicting their notable Truckee character.  Students researched information in books and on the web, while working with a partner, and will share their findings with the crew next week.

Question of the Week:

  • Who is your Truckee historical figure and why is he important to the history of Truckee?
  • Describe your poster in detail.
Spring Expedition:  Our spring science expedition will launch following Ski-Skate week.
Crew News

Tahoe SAFE Alliance:  On Monday, the Seaborg and Welch crews took part in a presentation on using words to communicate with friends and family members.  Students were taught about effective communication strategies to share their feelings with peers when they are sad or upset.  Ask your child about “I statements” or how we solve our problems in class using the “1-2-3 Solve with ME” protocol.

Valentine’s Day (Emapthy and Caring) and 100th Day of School:  February 14th is the 100th day of school as well as Valentines Day.  This week’s homework focuses on writing thoughtful notes to our crew mates.

Our Design Principle of the month is Empathy and Caring.  As a reminder, we encourage students to show they care for each other by using kind words when communicating with their peers.  In an effort to practice our writing skills and show our crew mates how much we care about them, we will have students write individual notes to each member of our crew.  We will exchange these notes next Thursday, February 14 at the end of the day.

Please encourage your child to create a homemade message for each member of our crew with a thoughtful note about that individual person.  Avoid generic comments like, “You’re nice.”  It is important for each student to take the time to mention something specific about each crew member.  Examples may include, “I really like when you invite me to eat lunch with you.  It makes me feel happy inside.”  Or “You make me smile everyday when you come to school and share your funny stories.”

Nevada County Library:  February 14th will be a busy day for the Welch crew as we will also be walking to the Nevada County Library on that day.  Please make sure your child brings their library books to school on that day to avoid late fees.

Harvest of the Month:  Thursday, February 7, our crew will be tasting BEETS.  I can hardly wait to see what yummy recipe Dana Mudd brings to school this week.  The students really enjoy the monthly tastings.
